The break room of a workplace is an area intended for temporary reprieve from assigned duties. Most spaces are utilitarian and may include: a couch, a small kitchen, or a table and chairs, to allow for sleeping, eating, or socializing. While a brief intermission during work hours isn’t worthy of clocking out for, breaking routine by autonomously leaving the work area, entering the break room, and opening and aimlessly staring into the fridge, provides something that goes beyond just the desire to mindless snack, but acts as a performance that holds possibility, discovery, instant gratification.
The refrigerator becomes a vessel for comfortable behavior, gripping the handle, opening the door, watching its contents illuminate, and engaging in a visual scan of the topography of its interior. Matic idealizes the possibilities found within refrigerators through a transformation of the interior into an abstracted environment, accomplished by using repurposed items commonly found within.
